The Handok Jesuk Foundation, a public interest corporation established by the late Chairman Kim Shinkwon, the founder of Handok, and Handok, has been continuously carrying out scholarship and research funding programs to nurture outstanding talents. Every year, medical and pharmacy students are selected and provided with full scholarships until graduation, and scholarships are also awarded to North Korean defectors majoring in health and medical fields recommended by the South-North Health and Medical Education Foundation. In addition, research funds are provided to medical science professors and researchers who have produced excellent research projects and achievements.
At the award ceremony, scholarships were given to a total of eight recipients, including existing scholarship students and newly selected ones this year. This year, four new students were selected: two from Hallym University College of Medicine, and one each from Ajou University and Sookmyung Women's University College of Pharmacy. The scholarship students recommended by the South-North Health and Medical Education Foundation included one each from Korea Bible University, Ewha Womans University, and Inje University, and two from Shinhan University, totaling five. Each student selected as a scholarship recipient was awarded 2 million KRW.
Research grants for professors were awarded to one person each in the fields of medicine and pharmacy. In the medical field, Professor Yoo Taeryong of The Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine, who proposed a research project on discovering new therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's dementia, was selected. In the pharmacy field, Professor Bae Munhyung of Gachon University, who proposed a research project titled ‘Discovery and biosynthetic pathway exploration of bioactive substances produced by the human gut microbe Cholinecella aerophila,’ was selected. Each received a research grant of 30 million KRW.
Kim Youngjin, Chairman of the Handok Jesuk Foundation, said, “We have heard that scholarship recipients who graduated after long-term scholarship programs have grown into talents contributing to the development of the medical field,” and added, “We will continue to steadily carry out scholarship and research support projects to serve as meaningful catalysts for the advancement of the medical field.”
