Support Project for Demonstration and Expansion of 'Visiting Cold Storage Sharing Service' Until April Next Year

Busan City has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's digital logistics service demonstration support project, securing 500 million KRW in national funding.
The digital logistics service demonstration project aims to enhance the efficiency of the existing logistics system by integrating various smart technologies across all sectors of the logistics industry, including transportation, storage, and cargo handling. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has been promoting this project annually through public contests since 2021.
In October last year, the city formed a consortium with Busan Technopark and Spaceport through its own public contest and submitted a project proposal to the Ministry in January this year. After presentations and evaluations, it was selected as the final project operator.
Following this selection, the city will invest a total of 1 billion KRW, including the secured 500 million KRW in national funding, to implement the "Visiting Cold Storage Sharing Service Demonstration and Expansion Support Project" by April next year.
This project rents cold storage facilities to agricultural, livestock, and fishery product producers, distributors, and traditional market businesses located in Busan that are unable to build cold storage due to lack of funds or require urgent cold storage temporarily due to breakdowns, business relocation, disasters (such as typhoons), or increased volume during peak holiday seasons.
Through the cold storage sharing service platform, users can apply via mobile to rent either installed or visiting cold storage for the required period. Using the Internet of Things (IoT), the storage temperature and any abnormalities of the cold storage can be monitored in real time.
The main components of the project include ▲installed cold storage sharing service ▲visiting cold storage sharing service ▲cold storage sharing service platform construction and operation ▲cold storage IoT monitoring service.
The installed cold storage sharing service allows small-scale merchants, such as those in traditional markets who need to store fresh food, to apply via mobile for a mobile cold storage unit. The cold storage is then installed in idle spaces near their business premises, allowing them to use it for the necessary period and return it afterward.
The visiting cold storage sharing service establishes a cold storage demonstration center in idle urban spaces, where users who need cold storage can visit directly and store fresh food for their desired period.
The cold storage sharing service platform project builds and operates a platform where users can apply for mobile cold storage installation services or reserve visiting cold storage spaces via mobile devices.
The cold storage IoT monitoring service provides real-time monitoring of storage temperature data and any abnormalities in the cold storage.
Jo Young-tae, Head of the New Airport Promotion Headquarters of Busan City, stated, “Through this support project, small-scale merchants who had difficulty securing cold storage due to financial difficulties will be able to use cold storage, minimizing inventory losses caused by fresh food disposal and reducing rental and transportation costs incurred from using distant cold storage.” He added, “In particular, this project is expected to contribute to establishing and expanding a cold chain logistics hub that provides fresh and safe food.”
