Oldest Incumbent Biden Raises Health Concerns↑
Meanwhile, Only 32% Say Trump Could "Fall"
Both Show Little Change in Approval Ratings
In a survey, nearly half of the voters expressed the view that President Joe Biden, who is considered a leading Democratic candidate in the upcoming U.S. presidential election this November, could drop out midway.
According to Politico, a U.S. political news outlet, on the 15th (local time), a poll conducted by Monmouth University in New Jersey from the 8th to the 12th of this month found that 20% of respondents believed there was a "very" high possibility that President Biden would be replaced by another Democratic candidate before the election day on November 5. Additionally, 28% of respondents said there was a "somewhat" chance of this happening.
The survey was conducted via telephone with 902 U.S. adults, including 822 registered voters. The confidence level was 95%, with a margin of error of ±4.3 percentage points.
On the other hand, regarding former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate expected to compete against Biden, 10% of respondents said there was a "very high" chance he would be replaced before the election day, and 22% said there was a "somewhat" chance.
This result is analyzed to be due to growing concerns about President Biden's health, as he is currently 81 years old, making him the oldest incumbent president.
Former President Trump is also 77 years old and held the record as the oldest U.S. president before Biden took office. However, respondents who mentioned the possibility of Trump dropping out cited not health reasons but his ongoing trials related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and allegations of interference in the 2020 election.
The percentage of respondents who believed President Biden has sufficient mental and physical stamina to lead the country was 32%. In contrast, 51% said the same about former President Trump.
However, Politico reported that the approval ratings for both candidates have shown little change since last fall. In the Monmouth University poll, 30% of respondents said they would "definitely support" President Biden, and 14% said they would "probably support" him. For former President Trump, 30% said they would "definitely support" him, and 16% said they would "probably support" him.
