Driving While License Suspended Due to Drunk Driving
Witness Emerges Revealing the Truth
In early January, an incident occurred where a vehicle driven by a woman in her 20s hit a motorcycle, resulting in the death of a man in his 70s. However, it was later revealed that the person who caused the accident was not the woman but her father. On the 14th, JTBC's 'Case Manager' reported on a collision between a motorcycle and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on a farm road in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, around 10:30 a.m. on January 9.
The motorcycle driver, Mr. A, who was seriously injured in the accident, was taken to the hospital but died. Afterwards, Mr. B (61), who was in the accident vehicle, visited the bereaved family and said, "My daughter was driving when the accident happened, and I was in the passenger seat. We did not notice the motorcycle while passing through the farm road." He added, "My daughter is very shocked and is at home. She is kneeling and apologizing." Mr. B also told the police that his daughter was driving, and his daughter herself stated that she caused the accident.

However, all of this turned out to be false. Through 'Case Manager,' Mr. A's son-in-law revealed a shocking story: "The perpetrator did not even call 119 immediately after the accident and carried Mr. A in the back seat of the car." He continued, "It took about 40 minutes to get to the hospital after the accident. The hospital said that if he had arrived within 30 minutes, he could have survived," expressing his frustration.
Mr. B claimed, "Right after the accident, Mr. A was breathing and seemed fine, so I performed CPR and took him to the hospital," but the medical staff who treated Mr. A said, "Mr. A suffered severe chest trauma and was already in cardiac arrest upon arrival at the hospital."
With no memory card in the vehicle's black box, it seemed the case would end there, but a witness came forward and revealed the truth. Witness Mr. C called 112 at the time of the accident and reported, "A moment ago, an elderly man on a motorcycle had an accident, but the driver did not call 119 and seemed to be performing CPR. One person was lying down, and the driver kept moving him." He reported that the driver appeared to be a man in his 50s or 60s. The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident was Mr. B, and Mr. B's daughter was not at the scene.
Evidence Shows Multiple Calls Between Father and Daughter at Time of Accident
After causing the accident, Mr. B called his daughter and told her to say that she was driving. He then picked her up and headed to the hospital. In fact, Mr. B made several calls to his daughter during the accident, and it was revealed that she tearfully complied with her father's request. The bereaved family suspects that the driver switch was because Mr. B had his license revoked in 2022 due to drunk driving and was driving without a license when the accident occurred. Additionally, Mr. B had previously caused an accident last year by confusing the brake and accelerator pedals.

When the driver switch was exposed, Mr. B explained, "I was in a state of confusion," and apologized, saying, "I'm sorry for lying. I was very scared and don't remember the situation well." However, the bereaved family appealed on 'Case Manager,' saying, "The prosecution is currently investigating the case, but we are frustrated because we have not received a proper explanation of the accident from the perpetrator. We want to know the truth."
Attorney Yang Ji-yeol, who learned of the case, stated, "Taking the victim in the car cannot be considered a rescue measure, so it is regarded as a kind of hit-and-run," adding, "This corresponds to the crime of hit-and-run causing death." The crime of hit-and-run causing death is as severe as murder because it punishes both intentional murder and unintentional death equally. It can result in life imprisonment or imprisonment for five years or more.
