Ulsan Health and Environment Institute Conducts Detailed Inspection of 100 Poultry Birds
The poultry at Ulsan Grand Park Zoo have been confirmed to be safe from avian influenza (AI).
On the 16th, the Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute announced that all AI test results for poultry raised at Ulsan Grand Park Zoo came back negative.
This inspection was conducted to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic AI into the nearby Ulsan Grand Park Zoo after a hawk rescued in Gyeongju on February 4th and transferred to the Ulsan Wildlife Rescue Management Center was found to be infected with highly pathogenic AI.
The test targeted about 100 poultry housed in five bird-rearing facilities within the zoo. Fecal and environmental samples were collected from each facility and subjected to detailed AI testing, all of which were confirmed negative.
The zoo temporarily closed from the 6th to prevent any possible AI inflow, and based on the negative test results, it will reopen on February 20th, after the 14-day maximum incubation period of AI following the hawk's capture has passed.
An official from the Ulsan Health and Environment Research Institute stated, “All poultry at the Grand Park tested negative for AI,” adding, “Since AI continues to occur nationwide not only in farmed poultry but also in wild birds, we will remain vigilant until the outbreak is completely over.”
