Expansion of AI and Data Infrastructure
Microsoft (MS) announced plans to invest 3.3 billion euros (approximately 4.7 trillion KRW) over the next two years to build data centers in Germany.
On the 15th (local time), according to major foreign media, Brad Smith, MS Vice Chairman, met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin and revealed these plans.
Vice Chairman Smith said, "The investment will be used to double MS's artificial intelligence (AI) and data infrastructure capacity," adding, "We want to help build the infrastructure and establish the technical foundation to fill jobs so that the German economy can continue to utilize AI."
Marianne Janik, MS Germany representative, said that although the exact investment locations have not been decided, they are considering the Rhineland region and areas around Frankfurt's financial district. MS's investment plan also includes an educational program targeting up to 1.2 million people, in addition to establishing data centers.
In response, Chancellor Scholz welcomed the announcement as a sign of confidence in Europe's largest economy.
Earlier, in November last year, MS announced plans to invest 2.5 billion pounds (approximately 4.1 trillion KRW) over three years in the UK to expand data capacity.
