Jeonnam Fire Department to Provide Free Residential Fire Safety Equipment to Fire-Vulnerable Groups Again This Year

Goal to Supply Over 15,000 Households

The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters (Chief Hong Young-geun) announced on the 14th that it will provide residential fire safety equipment free of charge this year to fire-vulnerable groups.

On the same day, Jeonnam Fire held a ceremony at the Sinan Fire Station to deliver residential fire safety equipment to households in island areas and those far from fire stations.

About 90 people attended the event, including Kim Moon-soo, a provincial assembly member of Sinan-gun, Choi Mi-sook, a provincial assembly member, Hong Young-geun, Chief of Jeonnam Fire Headquarters, and Jeong Jeong-du and Kim Sang-soon, presidents of the Sinan-gun Volunteer Fire Brigade Men’s and Women’s Associations.

The reason the Fire Headquarters is providing free fire safety equipment is to minimize human and property damage through initial response in case of fire.

In the past 10 years, residential fires nationwide accounted for 18.3% of all fires, but deaths caused by residential fires make up nearly half of all fire-related deaths.

In Jeonnam as well, more than half of the casualties caused by fire occur in residences.

The fire safety equipment that must be installed in homes consists of fire extinguishers and standalone smoke detectors; fire extinguishers help with initial fire suppression, and detectors assist in quick evacuation during residential fires.

Jeonnam Fire provided free residential fire safety equipment to about 17,000 households last year, and this year aims to supply to about 15,000 households.

In addition, along with the free distribution of residential fire safety equipment, they plan to promote the importance of installing fire extinguishers and detectors to spread a culture of voluntary installation among residents.

Chief Hong Young-geun said, “Residential fires are one of the main threats to the safety of the residents,” and added, “We ask residents to fully recognize the importance and to be sure to install fire extinguishers and detectors in their homes.”
