Yoon Appoints Former Minister of Industry Ju Hyung-hwan as Vice Chairman of Low Birthrate Committee

Gwanseop Lee, Chief Secretary, "We Will Achieve Tangible Results"

President Yoon Suk-yeol appointed former Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Joo Hyung-hwan as the Vice Chairman (ministerial level) of the Low Fertility and Aging Society Committee on the 12th.


Lee Kwan-seop, Chief of Staff to the President, announced the appointment of the Vice Chairman of the Low Fertility Committee during a press briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office in the afternoon.


Born in Seoul in 1961, Vice Chairman Joo graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Business Administration and entered public service through the 26th Administrative Examination. He served as a bureaucrat at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and held positions as the 1st Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy during the Park Geun-hye administration.

Lee introduced him as "a policy expert well known in the public sector for driving policies forward with determination and persistently managing tasks," adding, "Based on his long experience, extensive policy coordination in economic and social fields, and outstanding execution skills, he is expected to comprehensively lead the Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s low fertility and aging society policies and rapidly produce tangible results that the public can feel."


Additionally, President Yoon appointed Professor Choi Seul-gi of the Korea Development Institute as a standing member of the Low Fertility Committee. Born in 1971, Professor Choi graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Sociology and earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of North Carolina in the United States. Lee explained, "She is a leading demographer in Korea and was judged to be the right person to seek effective policy alternatives based on her research achievements."


Meanwhile, Yoon Oh-jun, current Cybersecurity Secretary at the National Security Office, was appointed as the 3rd Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service. Lee stated, "He holds a Ph.D. in IT Policy and combines both theory and practice," adding, "He was deemed the right person to oversee the NIS’s scientific cyber intelligence operations."
