A man in his 30s who threw two cats he was raising from a high floor of an officetel, causing their deaths, was sentenced to a suspended prison term. On the 8th, Judge Kim Jae-yoon of the Changwon District Court Criminal Division 6 announced that he sentenced the man, identified as A, who was charged with violating the Animal Protection Act, to one year in prison with a two-year suspension. The court also ordered A to undergo probation, complete 240 hours of community service, and attend 40 hours of violence treatment lectures.

A was brought to trial on charges of throwing two cats he was raising out of a window on the 12th floor of an officetel in Gimhae, Gyeongnam Province, at 4:41 a.m. last June, resulting in their deaths. Investigations revealed that A was intoxicated at the time. It was reported that he committed the crime without any particular reason.

A claimed, "The cats must have opened the window screen and fallen," but the court did not accept this. The court pointed out, "If the cats had opened the screen, it would have remained open after the fall, but photos taken by witnesses after the incident show the screen closed," adding, "It is difficult to believe the cats opened the screen themselves and fell."

The court further stated, "Just before the incident, A entered the room where the cats fell, which is also his residence, and only male DNA was detected on the cats, proving the crime," and ruled, "The method of the crime was harsh and cruel, and there was a risk of harm to witnesses below the building, so the nature of the crime is serious." The court explained the sentencing by saying, "Nevertheless, considering that he denied the crime with an unconvincing excuse, and that he has only one prior fine and no other criminal record, the sentence was determined accordingly."
