It Seems They Feared Organizational Damage
It has been confirmed that Kim Seon-gyu, Acting Chief of the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit, tendered his resignation on the 7th.
According to legal circles, Kim expressed his intention to resign during the unit's executive meeting on the same day.
Kim's resignation is believed to have been influenced by the guilty verdict he received in the second trial of a case in which he was indicted for leaking investigation records he had prepared while working at the prosecution. The Seoul Central District Court overturned the first trial's not guilty verdict and sentenced him to a fine of 20 million won in the second trial hearing held the day before.
At the meeting, Kim reportedly apologized to the members of the unit for causing personal inconvenience and expressed concern about potential harm to the organization. It is also believed that handling a personal legal matter while in public office was a significant burden for him.
However, since both the chief and deputy chief are currently absent, and the absence of the acting chief could exacerbate confusion, Kim is expected to submit his formal resignation letter at the next meeting of the candidate recommendation committee for the unit's chief, scheduled for the 29th of this month.
