Gwangju Seo-gu Awarded 'Good Policy Award for Lifelong Learning City of Korea'

Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on the 5th that it has won the 'Good Policy Award for Lifelong Learning Cities in Korea.'

The National Lifelong Learning Cities Association holds an annual Good Policy Award contest to share excellent lifelong education projects nationwide, targeting 196 lifelong learning cities across the country.

Seo-gu was selected as one of the 61 lifelong learning cities with good policies that have social and cultural ripple effects, including the policy of 'The Largest University in the World.'

The lifelong learning brand 'The Largest University in the World, Seo-gu,' where the entire Seo-gu becomes one university, received high attention for operating four core tasks: ▲'Integrated Platform Construction' operating departments and an honorary citizen degree system ▲'Creating Nearby Learning Centers' such as operating Dong Campuses linked with 40 district office departments and Dong BI ▲'Support for Digital and Online Lectures' through content-sharing MOUs with K-MOOC and Gwangju Talent Lifelong Education Center ▲Linkage and cooperation with local universities.

Last month, Seo-gu established a dedicated team called the Largest University Team through organizational restructuring, using it as an opportunity to take a step forward as a lifelong learning city. It plans to recruit students next month by selecting programs in citizen participation departments, humanities and social sciences departments, and cultural arts departments.

Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, said, “The 'Seokeundae' project, which was promoted as a reverse idea due to the absence of a university in Seo-gu, is changing the paradigm of lifelong learning. We will continue to realize lifelong learning close to residents and create a lifelong learning city Seo-gu that approaches residents so that anyone can enjoy high-quality education comfortably within a 10-minute living radius.”
