Yoon Geon-young, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who was prosecuted for falsely registering an intern in the National Assembly and receiving a salary, was sentenced to a fine in the first trial.

Yoon is accused of falsely registering employee Kim Ha-ni as an intern in the office of National Assembly member Baek Won-woo while serving as the Planning Director of the Korea Future Development Institute (Miraeyeon) in August 2011, and receiving about 5.45 million won in salary from the National Assembly Secretariat for about five months.

The case came to light after Kim, who worked with Yoon, reported it. Subsequently, the civic group 'Action Alliance for Upholding the Rule of Law' filed a complaint against Yoon and former member Baek.

The prosecution filed a summary indictment against Yoon and former Baek with fines of 3 million won each. The court issued summary orders with higher fines of 5 million won each. Former Baek accepted the 5 million won fine, but Yoon appealed and requested a formal trial.
