On the 31st, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced that, together with the Incheon Tourism Organization, they successfully secured Incheon as the host city for the ‘2024 Asia-Pacific Wind Energy Summit (APAC Wind Energy Summit 2024)’ organized by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
The event will be held from November 26 to 28 at the Songdo Convensia in Incheon. More than 3,500 wind energy sector stakeholders, including around 1,200 foreigners, will participate in the event, which will feature conferences aimed at advancing the wind energy industry in the Asia-Pacific region as well as exhibitions by related industrial organizations.
Since last year, the Korea Tourism Organization has utilized its London branch network to gather information about the event in advance and communicated directly with the GWEC headquarters, focusing on promoting Korea as a MICE event destination.
In particular, the organization invited GWEC Chief Operating Officer Stuart Murlin to Korea to introduce major MICE facilities and industry stakeholders, and on the 19th, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GWEC and the Incheon Tourism Organization to ensure the successful hosting of the event. Additionally, the organization is planning a gala dinner and cultural tourism programs to promote inbound tourism and enhance participant satisfaction.
GWEC evaluated Korea as a market with great potential, noting that Korea aims to increase the share of renewable energy generation to 21.6% by 2030, with an energy supply target of 14.3GW through offshore wind power. GWEC stated, "Incheon has a very favorable environment for large-scale offshore wind power generation along with future port development plans, and is expected to establish itself as a strategic hub within the Asia-Pacific region," explaining the reason for selecting Incheon as the host city.
Meanwhile, the Korea Tourism Organization attracted a total of 22 conferences last year, including major international meetings such as the 2027 International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly (Incheon) and the 2024 International Academy of Management Annual Conference (Seoul), drawing over 15,000 foreign participants.
This year, the organization is providing comprehensive support to various domestic and international academic societies and associations to attract mega international conferences through ▲international conference support systems ▲marketing for international conference attraction linked with overseas branches ▲support projects for medium to large-scale attraction linked with domestic MICE organizations ▲Meet in Korea campaign ▲and operation of Korea MICE Ambassadors.
Jung Chang-wook, Director of the MICE Division at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, “The synergy effect of the organization’s overseas network and the Incheon Tourism Organization’s regional marketing efforts has yielded excellent results in attracting large international conferences,” adding, “We will continue to collaborate with related organizations and do our best to expand the attraction of international conferences to Korea.”
More detailed information about the organization’s international conference support projects can be found on the K-MICE and TourAz websites.
