Imposition of Fines for Violations
On the 31st, Anseong City in Gyeonggi-do announced that it will conduct a focused inspection on the appropriateness of excessive packaging and separate disposal labeling of holiday gifts, mainly targeting large distribution companies such as marts, until the 1st of next month ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
The main items subject to this focused inspection are confectionery, alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, miscellaneous goods, and primary food products. If excessive packaging is detected by exceeding the packaging space ratio (10% to 35% or less depending on the item) or the packaging frequency limit (within 1 to 2 times depending on the item), a fine of up to 3 million KRW will be imposed.
The city will also check the appropriateness of separate disposal labeling on Lunar New Year gift sets. A fine of up to 3 million KRW will be imposed if the separate disposal labeling is not done or is falsely indicated.
For products expected to violate packaging standards based on the inspection results, the city plans to issue a 'packaging inspection order.' Manufacturers who receive the inspection order must request an inspection from specialized institutions such as the Korea Environment Corporation or the Korea Conformity Laboratories and submit the inspection report within 20 days. If the inspection report is not submitted within the deadline or if a packaging standard violation is confirmed, a fine of up to 3 million KRW will be imposed.
