On the 29th, traffic safety education and field training were conducted for 1st graders at Geumyang Elementary School... Joint traffic safety campaign by civil, government, and police... 'Children's School Route Environment Improvement Project' completed last December at Geumyang Elementary and 8 other locations
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Hee-young) conducted a children's traffic safety education program on the 29th at Geumyang Elementary School for 40 first-grade elementary students in collaboration with the Yongsan Police Station.
This education aimed to raise children's awareness of traffic safety and teach traffic accident prevention rules to create a safe school commute route at the start of the school year.
The district, in cooperation with Geumyang Elementary School and Yongsan Police Station, carried out a campaign targeting lower-grade students at the beginning of the school year to prevent accidents in school zones and raise awareness about traffic safety. Mayor Park Hee-young also attended and actively participated as a guardian of children's traffic safety.
First-grade students at Geumyang Elementary School watched audiovisual materials on safe road crossing and learned the five principles of safe road crossing under the guidance of a professional instructor. They also practiced crossing the crosswalk safely with police officers.
The ‘Five Principles of Road Crossing’ are: ▲Stop first before the crosswalk ▲Look left and right ▲Raise your hand while crossing ▲Confirm that cars have stopped ▲Cross while watching for vehicles.
Mayor Park set the ‘Improvement Project for the Environment Around Children's School Routes’ as a pledge for the 8th term of the civilian administration.
Accordingly, the district carried out an environment improvement project around school routes targeting nine elementary schools: Geumyang Elementary, Namjeong Elementary, Bogwang Elementary, Shingwang Elementary, Shinyongsan Elementary, Yongam Elementary, Wonhyo Elementary, Itaewon Elementary, and Hannam Elementary.
Starting with Bogwang Elementary in 2022, a budget of 1.8 billion KRW was invested to install traffic safety facilities such as LED floor-type pedestrian signals, voice guidance auxiliary devices, and LED runway-type crosswalk markers, with construction completed in December last year.
In particular, in front of Geumyang Elementary School, the district newly installed the first ‘glass bead reflective curb’ in Yongsan-gu. The glass bead reflective curb enhances driver visibility by applying high-intensity glass bead reflective materials to the existing boundary curbs of the children's protection zone.
Since last year, vehicle control, which had been a complaint from parents, has also been implemented. A section of Hyochangwon-ro 64-gil is restricted to vehicles during school hours (8:30 AM to 9:00 AM) to create a safe school commute route.
Furthermore, in 2024, the district plans to maintain and improve safety facilities within protection zones, including traffic signs, anti-slip pavement, protective fences, and unmanned traffic enforcement cameras.
Additionally, the district installed 13 speed and signal violation enforcement cameras at locations within children's protection zones where vehicle violations are frequent and the risk of child traffic accidents is high. Currently, there are a total of 47 enforcement cameras in the area.
Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “We will actively support creating safe streets through the spread of a traffic safety culture in children's protection zones and environmental improvement projects. I hope children will adhere to what they learned today and create safe routes to and from school on their own.”
