The business agreement ceremony was held with the attendance of Mayor Lee Kang-deok, Director Ham In-seok of Pohang Medical Center, Director Han Dong-seon of Pohang Semyung Christian Hospital, Director Choi Soon-ho of Pohang St. Mary's Hospital, Director Kwon Heum-dae of S-Pohang Hospital, and Director Koo Ja-hyun of Good Sunrin Hospital.

This agreement was prepared to unite efforts for attracting the bio specialized complex, which Pohang City is focusing on, and the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School.

Pohang City and five general hospitals in the region agreed to cooperate in establishing a smart health management system for local residents and creating an ecosystem to revitalize regional healthcare and foster the bio industry.

After signing the agreement, Mayor Lee Kang-deok held a meeting to listen to the difficulties faced by the local medical community and continued communication, urging local general hospitals to actively participate in expanding medical services for Pohang citizens.

With several cities including Incheon and other metropolitan areas, as well as Gangwon, Jeonbuk, and Chungbuk, competing to attract the bio specialized complex, the unified voice of Pohang’s regional hospital directors is expected to gain significant strength in line with the government’s policy to overcome the regional medical crisis.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “The cooperation of local hospitals is crucial for the growth of the bio-health industry, including the attraction of the bio specialized complex and the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School. We expect them to take a leading role on a pan-regional level to revitalize the bio industry.” He added, “We will actively consider administrative support to resolve difficulties in assigning residents to local hospitals and to ensure smooth supply of nursing personnel.”

Since last October, Pohang City has formed a working group centered on local industry-academia-research-hospital-government stakeholders to fully commit to the business promotion for attracting the bio specialized complex, and plans to submit the application to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy by the end of February.

If designated as a bio specialized complex, Pohang will receive benefits necessary for fostering strategic industries, including expedited processing of permits and approvals, various tax benefits, and support for technology development and workforce training.
