Although His Wife Did Not Want Punishment... Jeong Su-geun Sent to Prosecution for 'Golf Club Assault'

Application of Special Assault Charges Not Subject to Victim's Forgiveness Rule

Former baseball player Jung Soo-geun (47) has been referred to the prosecution on charges of assaulting his wife with a golf club while intoxicated.

The Namyangju Nambu Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 30th that Jung, who was booked on charges of special assault, was sent to the prosecution without detention.

Jung is accused of hitting his wife, Ms. A, once on the forehead with a golf club while drunk at their home around 5 a.m. on the 20th. The police, who responded to Ms. A’s report, arrested Jung at the scene.

Jung, who was investigated twice by the police as a suspect in domestic violence, reportedly denied the assault charges. Ms. A initially wanted her husband to be punished but recently changed her stance and told the police that she "does not want punishment."

However, considering that a golf club was used during the crime and that Ms. A had abrasions on her forehead, the police applied special assault charges against Jung. Special assault is punishable even if the victim does not want prosecution.

Jung was also booked without detention last month on the 21st for special injury after swinging a liquor bottle at a man while drinking together at a pub, injuring him. The police recently referred that case to the prosecution as well.
