Gangdong-gu Applies Bichsalmunui Togi Design to Subway Ventilation Grates

Gangdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 29th that it has completed a stylish transformation by applying a Gangdong-style design to the ventilation shafts at Cheonho Station on Subway Lines 5 and 8, which have a high volume of pedestrian traffic.

The district is promoting a public design project that comprehensively considers factors such as the distance from the entrances, the aging of the facilities, and harmony with surrounding buildings, so that the subway ventilation shafts at Cheonho Station can be recognized as a gateway to Gangdong.

Overall, the design incorporates the feel of comb-patterned pottery, a Gangdong-style motif, and uses colors and designs that blend well with the surroundings to facilitate easy management as urban facilities. In particular, a symbolic sculpture was attached to the large ventilation shaft between exits 7 and 8 of Cheonho Station, and benches were installed to provide resting spots for pedestrians.

This improvement project was also planned and designed to be linked with the Cheonho Rodeo Street nightscape project and the ‘Seongnae Vitality Street’ project, which extends from Jjukkumi Alley to Gangpul Cartoon Street.

Kim Jun-oh, head of the district’s Urban Landscape Division, said, “Cheonho Station is both the gateway to Gangdong-gu and a representative commercial area, but it had the problem of feeling like an aging street, so we attempted to improve its image. The ventilation shaft landscape improvement project is the first step toward creating a street with symbolism and dignity. We will also promote the Rodeo Street and Seongnae Vitality Street projects to ensure that the Cheonho Station area becomes a notable attraction in Gangdong-gu.”
