Breathing New Life into Yeongdeungpo-gu Old Downtown... Final Push to Complete Environmental Improvements around Gyeongin-ro

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced plans to complete the urban regeneration project aimed at improving the environment along Gyeongin-ro (from Yeongdeungpo Station to Dorimcheon Intersection) within this year.

This project is being promoted to revitalize the old downtown area where machinery and metal factories are concentrated, including Mullae-dong and Yeongdeungpo-dong. Since February 2017, when the area was finally selected as an urban regeneration activation zone, the district has been steadily working to complete the project with goals such as ▲improving residential and industrial environments ▲expanding living infrastructure ▲creating startup support infrastructure.

Since 2018, the district has invested a total of 26.4 billion KRW (1.2 billion KRW from the national government, 25.1 billion KRW from the city, and 100 million KRW from the district) and has completed 11 out of the originally planned 16 projects.

Major projects include the ‘Industrial Support Anchor Facility,’ established in 2021 with an investment of 2.4 billion KRW to strengthen the capabilities of Yeongdeungpo’s small manufacturers, and the Yeongdeungpo Station space improvement project, implemented in 2022 with 3.5 billion KRW to enhance the public nature of Yeongdeungpo Station and revitalize the local economy.

Additionally, the district replaced 279 signboards to improve the environment along Gyeongin-ro, installed 160 dust collectors to support machinery and metal manufacturing workplaces, and improved the pedestrian environment around Daeseon Flour Mill, among other internal and external environment improvement projects, receiving strong support from local residents.

The district stated that the remaining five projects, including pedestrian environment improvements around Mullae Art Village and streetscape improvements along Gyeongin-ro as well as private sector regeneration projects, are scheduled to be completed by the second half of this year.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “We will swiftly complete this project to dramatically transform the old downtown area of Yeongdeungpo-gu,” and added, “We will continue to establish plans for mutually beneficial development through ongoing communication and consensus-building with local residents.”
