The Ministry of Education announced on the 28th that it will change the hiring requirements for contract teachers starting this year to alleviate the hiring burden at schools.
On the 23rd, the Ministry of Education held a review meeting to ensure smooth implementation in the field and requested cooperation from metropolitan and provincial offices of education to abolish the age limit for contract teachers and expand the listed subjects.
Until last year, when hiring contract teachers, each metropolitan and provincial office of education had to impose age limits on the teachers to be hired and restrict the listed subjects. Most education offices set an age limit of 62 for the first announcement and raised the upper age limit to 65 for the second announcement. For the subjects in charge, science subjects had to be subdivided into 'Physics,' 'Chemistry,' 'Biology,' 'Earth Science,' etc., and social studies subjects also had to be subdivided into 'Ethics,' 'Geography,' etc., when posting hiring announcements.
Starting this year, the upper age limit can be raised to 65 from the first announcement, or there may be no age limit at all. The subjects can also be relaxed to categories such as 'Science' and 'Social Studies' when posting announcements.
Oh Seok-hwan, Vice Minister of Education, said, "Ahead of the new semester, we are creating conditions that allow teachers to focus on education by easing the hiring requirements for contract teachers and establishing a system that separates Neulbom School tasks from existing teachers." He added, "We will continue to supplement and promote measures to reduce administrative work so that schools can carry out their educational planning without disruption."
