Expected to Provide Comprehensive and Professional Senior Welfare Services as a Modern Senior Welfare Center with Complex Functions Serving as a Regional Hub to Meet Diverse Welfare Needs of Seniors Including Health, Culture, Communication, and Education
Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Seongbuk-gu Public Senior Welfare Center on the 26th.
The ceremony was attended by Seongbuk-gu Mayor Lee Seung-ro, National Assembly member Kim Young-bae, city and district council members, as well as about 150 local residents including representatives from the Seongbuk-gu Senior Citizens Association, the Community Social Security Council, and the Residents' Autonomy Committee. The event proceeded in the order of opening declaration, project progress report, commemorative speech, groundbreaking ceremony, and commemorative photo session.
The Seongbuk-gu Public Senior Welfare Center will be built on a site of 708.70㎡ located at 340 Dongseon-dong 4-ga and two other parcels (within the Dongseon 2 Housing Redevelopment Zone), with a total floor area of 2,851.15㎡, consisting of 2 basement floors and 6 above-ground floors. The total project cost is approximately 13.2 billion KRW, with completion targeted for December 2025.
Various spaces will be arranged by floor. The first basement floor will serve as the main entrance, housing an information desk and an informatization education room. The first floor will include a 12-space parking lot and a secondary entrance. The second floor will have an integrated office, meeting rooms, and document storage for the operation of the senior welfare center, along with a job counseling room. The third floor will feature a multipurpose auditorium, and the fourth floor will include a calligraphy room, janggi (Korean chess) and baduk (Go) rooms, and program rooms. The fifth floor will be dedicated to physical activities for seniors, with a fitness room, physical therapy room, and health counseling room. The sixth floor will house a dining hall, kitchen, and caf? lounge, making it a modern senior welfare center with complex functions that meet seniors' diverse welfare needs in health, culture, communication, and education.
The Seongbuk-gu Public Senior Welfare Center is expected to serve as a community-based welfare center providing comprehensive and specialized senior welfare services in preparation for the rapid increase of the elderly population in the super-aged society. In particular, it will provide a foundation for seniors living in areas such as Seongbuk-dong, Samseon-dong, Bomun-dong, Anam-dong, and Donam-dong?who previously had difficulty accessing the existing Seongbuk Senior Welfare Center located in Jongam-dong due to distance and transportation issues?to conveniently enjoy various welfare services.
Seongbuk-gu Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, “The Seongbuk-gu Public Senior Welfare Center will be composed of informatization education rooms, dining halls, caf?s, fitness rooms, physical therapy rooms, calligraphy, baduk, and social education program rooms, creating a happy space for seniors encompassing community, health, lifelong learning, and cultural arts activities.” He added, “As this facility is for the residents, we will ensure safe and meticulous construction and completion so that it can be opened to the residents as soon as possible, sparing no effort or support.”
Meanwhile, on the 15th, demolition and clearing of existing buildings on the site of the public senior welfare center were completed, and from the groundbreaking ceremony onward, preliminary construction procedures such as ground investigation, current status surveying, and civil engineering design will commence.
