Sentenced to 4 Months Imprisonment with 2 Years Probation

A woman in her 40s was sentenced to prison for throwing her two pet dogs out of an apartment balcony window, causing their deaths, because they could not control their bowel movements.

On the 25th, Judge Kim Si-won of the Chuncheon District Court Yeongwol Branch Criminal Division 1 announced that A (49), who was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Animal Protection Act, was sentenced to 4 months in prison with a 2-year probation. Additionally, A was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service.

A was charged with grabbing the necks of two puppies aged 1 to 2 months, which she was raising, and throwing them out of the balcony window from the third floor of an apartment in Taebaek City at around 5:30 p.m. on August 28 last year, because they could not control their bowel movements. One of the puppies thrown out the window died instantly, and the other was taken to an animal hospital but reportedly died during treatment.

Judge Kim stated, "The method of causing death by cruelly throwing two puppies aged 1 to 2 months out the window without any particular reason shows a very bad nature of the crime."

Meanwhile, under current law, killing animals by cruel methods is prohibited. Violators may face up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won. Even if the animal does not die, causing injury can result in up to 2 years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won.
