On-Device Visual AI Enhances Video Shooting and Editing Performance

The artificial intelligence (AI) models embedded in the Galaxy S24 series have been revealed to number 112, which is 28 times more than four years ago.

On the 18th (local time), Seongdae Cho, Vice President and Head of the Visual Solution Team at Samsung Electronics' MX Division, said this at a press briefing held at Samsung Research America (SRA) located in Mountain View, Silicon Valley, USA.

Vice President Cho also stated, "The performance of the neural processing unit (NPU) included in the S24 series has improved 13 times." The NPU is an AI-driven chip. He said, "We are developing various solutions so that the Galaxy camera can create results that overcome the limits of time and space, and AI is at the center of this."

He went on to explain that the 'On-Device Visual AI' integrated into the S24 series "makes the S24 the fastest and smartest camera and supports professional-level content creation." 'On-Device Visual AI' refers to the AI that operates within the S24 series to assist with photo and video shooting and editing.

He revealed, "Visual AI models were first introduced in the Galaxy S10 in 2019," adding, "At that time, the NPU was first installed in smartphones to efficiently run these models."

He continued, "The S10 had four AI models, but the Galaxy S24 uses 112 AI models, which is 28 times more, and the NPU performance has improved about 13 times."

He added, "This means that advanced AI models capable of faster and more accurate image recognition and processing have been installed," and said, "Visual AI creates optimal results through the synergy of AI models, data, and the NPU."

The new S24 Ultra is equipped with a new feature called the Quad Tele System, which provides optical zoom-level images at 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x zoom.

Nightography, which produces clear images even in dark environments, has been enhanced, and a feature called Instant Slomo, where AI analyzes movement between frames during video recording and generates intermediate frames, has also been added.

He said, "Generative AI technology is producing scenarios we could not have imagined," and added, "The technology for AI to generate intermediate frames was something we were not confident about just two years ago."

He also suggested the possibility of applying new features to previous models, saying, "When developing new products, our goal is to develop so that new features can be applied to previous models."

Regarding the camera features of the new foldable phone to be released in the second half of the year, he confidently said, "We will provide satisfactory image quality and performance," and asked people to look forward to it.

Vice President Cho said, "I want the camera functions of the S24 to be evaluated as much more natural and three-dimensional when taking pictures," and added, "We want to provide photos that are as similar as possible to what the human eye sees, with a sense of depth even when shooting clouds or faces."
