Nakdonggangcheong Supports 27.7 Billion Won Budget for River Maintenance Management

Focused Maintenance of Water Control Facilities and More

The Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office announced on the 23rd that it will provide a total of 27.7 billion KRW in national treasury budget support to local governments in the Yeongnam region, including Busan, Ulsan, Daegu, and Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do, for the systematic management of national rivers this year.

The national river maintenance subsidy will be primarily used for disaster prevention activities such as inspection and maintenance of flood control facilities within the rivers, including embankments and sluice gates, as well as the maintenance of waterfront facilities developed as leisure spaces for local residents, such as bicycle paths and walking trails.

Currently, major facilities within the Nakdong River, such as embankments, irrigation channels, and drainage gates, are directly managed by the national government, while the maintenance of waterfront facilities like high-water areas and 18 other national rivers in the Yeongnam region, excluding the Nakdong River, is carried out by the respective local governments.

This year, the Nakdong River Office plans to prioritize disaster prevention by establishing a cooperative system with local governments within its jurisdiction, conducting focused inspections and management of flood-vulnerable sections, and supporting the maintenance of flood control facilities that urgently require repair before the flood season.

Regarding various waterfront facilities within national rivers, such as bicycle paths created as leisure spaces for local residents, the office also plans to support maintenance budgets by reflecting local opinions as much as possible to create a pleasant usage environment and improve user satisfaction.

Chief Officer Choi Jong-won stated, “We will regularly inspect the execution status of the national treasury subsidies to ensure there is no misuse or waste of the budget and will thoroughly manage the subsidies. We will make every effort to maintain national rivers not only for disaster prevention but also for pleasant and eco-friendly river management.”
