Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is promoting an online petition titled ‘Urgent Promotion of Single-Track Railway Construction and Request for Increased Train Operations’ to alleviate the inconvenience experienced by local residents due to the insufficient number of train services on the Suin-Bundang Line between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations.
The Suin-Bundang Line originally operated from Incheon Station through Suwon Station and Gangnam-gu Office Station to Wangsimni Station, but since December 2018, the service has been extended to Cheongnyangni Station. Currently, there are only 9 one-way trips per day (5 on weekends) between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations, causing frequent inconvenience for Dongdaemun-gu residents and other citizens using Cheongnyangni Station, who must transfer from the Gyeongui-Jungang Line at Wangsimni Station to the Suin-Bundang Line.
In response, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport included the ‘Construction of a Single-Track Railway between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni Stations’ as a new project in the ‘4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan’ in July 2021. In December last year, the Korea Rail Network Authority signed a contract for a preliminary feasibility study, which is currently underway and expected to be completed by June 2024.
The district expects that the construction of the single-track railway will resolve the bottleneck between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni and improve transportation convenience for local residents. Therefore, it is promoting the online petition organized by the provisional ‘Suin-Bundang Line Promotion Committee’ titled ‘Urgent Promotion of Single-Track Railway Construction and Request for Increased Train Operations’ among residents.
Since September last year, the district has installed online petition banners in the district office lobby, district council, and community service centers, and since January this year, it has also been promoting the petition through the Dongdaemun-gu website and blog.
Residents can easily participate in the petition by clicking the bulletin board on the Dongdaemun-gu website or through posts in the ‘Information Plaza’ section of the blog. Additionally, the petition will be featured in the February newsletter to encourage more residents to join the online petition campaign.
The provisional ‘Suin-Bundang Line Promotion Committee’ plans to carry out the petition campaign until the first half of this year and submit the results to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “The construction of the single-track railway between Wangsimni and Cheongnyangni stations on the Suin-Bundang Line will improve transportation convenience not only for residents but also for Gyeonggi-do citizens,” and added, “We ask for the active interest and participation of residents to expedite the establishment of a northeastern metropolitan transportation system centered on Cheongnyangni Station.”
