Dr. Kim Jeongsang, Co-founder of IonQ, Selected as Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors

Achievements in Quantum Computing Recognized by the US Scientific Community

Jungsang Kim, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of IonQ, a global leader in the quantum computing industry, was selected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in 2023. Dr. Kim's scientific and technological achievements related to quantum computers have been recognized by the mainstream scientific community in the United States.

The NAI annually selects Fellows from inventors registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and scientists who have developed innovative technologies that contribute to economic development and improvement of quality of life. The Fellow award ceremony will be held at the 13th NAI Conference from June 16 to 18 in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.


Dr. Jungsang Kim stated, "I am honored to have my name listed alongside those who have led significant advancements in science and technology and achieved remarkable success in commercializing innovative inventions. The advancement of quantum computing technology demonstrates how this technology can bring significant changes to various industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation. I am very pleased that the technologies I invented are contributing to building the world’s most powerful quantum systems through IonQ."


Founded in 2015 by Dr. Kim, IonQ licenses and utilizes 19 technologies from the 35 patents he developed at Duke University, including a modular fault-tolerant quantum computer architecture based on ion traps, quantum circuit compression methods to reduce the number of gates, and software methods for controlling quantum computers. In addition, Dr. Kim has filed 13 new patent applications. IonQ was the first quantum computing company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Quantum computers are advanced scientific technologies that President Yoon Suk-yeol has also shown interest in and promised to foster.
