Rapper Newchamp Posts Apology Amid Growing Controversy
Rapper New Champ (37) apologized after claiming that he was the 30-something rapper who confessed to the police about drug use, saying it was a joke when the controversy grew.
On the 20th, New Champ posted on his Instagram account, "I didn't expect a comment made as a joke to cause such a big stir," and added, "I am very pathetic and regretful. I am sorry."
Earlier, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced on the 19th that a rapper in his 30s, referred to as Mr. A, was under preliminary investigation for drug use. It was reported that Mr. A approached a police officer working near the Seoul Veterans Stream in Yongsan-gu at around 8:40 a.m. that day and said he intended to confess to using drugs. At the time, Mr. A was reportedly incoherent and rambling.
After this was reported in the media, New Champ commented on an internet community post about the incident on the same day, saying, "I confessed because I’m the XXX who releases new songs and doesn’t do drugs. It felt good." This comment spread across social media and other communities, sparking controversy, and eventually New Champ posted an apology and explanation three days later.
Meanwhile, rapper Mr. A, who confessed to drug use to the police, was sent to a nearby police station and later transferred to the Yongsan Police Station. The police reportedly investigated the specific facts with Mr. A.
