Kakao announced on the 22nd that it has started supplying renewable energy power at the Pangyo Ajit, where its headquarters and major affiliates' employees work. The Jeju office also procured 100% of its electricity from renewable energy through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) for the second consecutive year.
To promote the social value of renewable energy, Kakao purchased Renewable Energy Certificates produced by citizen cooperatives across Gyeonggi Province last year and procured all the electricity consumed during the operation of the Jeju office in 2022 from eco-friendly solar energy.
This year, to supply the electricity used at the Jeju office and Pangyo Ajit in 2023 with renewable energy, Kakao collaborated with Jeju-based energy IT platform startup 'VPPlab' and energy IT social venture 'Sixty Hertz'. Through VPPlab, wind power energy within Jeju Island was procured, and through Sixty Hertz, renewable energy from solar power plants produced by citizen cooperatives in Gyeonggi Province was sourced.
The total amount of electricity procured through these companies is 4,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), which is double the amount of renewable energy purchased in 2022. Kakao procured all the electricity used at the Jeju office in 2023 and covered about 10% of the electricity used at Pangyo Ajit.
Yook Sim-na, Head of Kakao ESG Business Office, said, "The procurement of renewable energy for the electricity used at the Jeju office and Pangyo Ajit is intended to spread the meaning of joining forces to coexist with the local community and solve environmental issues." She added, "In 2024, Kakao will continue to review and implement various measures to expand consensus on eco-friendliness and carbon neutrality and to further promote their social value."
