Gwangju Gwangsan-gu 'Free Multi-use Container Rental' Greatly Reduces Single-use Items

Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has significantly reduced the use of disposable products at festivals and events through its 'Reusable Container Free Rental' service, which was launched to respond to the climate crisis and promote a resource circulation culture.

Gwangju Gwangsan-gu 'Free Multi-use Container Rental' Greatly Reduces Single-use Items

The district signed a business agreement with the Citizens' Life Environment Council and Walking Mom Co., Ltd., and has been operating the 'Reusable Container Support Center' since August last year, providing reusable tableware free of charge at local events and festivals.

As a result, it was recorded that 19,458 reusable tableware items were used by 45 organizations and groups by December last year.

Gwangsan-gu reusable tableware was used at village events held by district residents, as well as festivals and events hosted by Gwangju public institutions and civic groups.

In the autumn season, when festivals are concentrated and the climate crisis is becoming increasingly severe, the demand to reduce disposable product use coincided with many places turning to the Gwangsan-gu Reusable Container Support Center.

Seo-gu's 'Seochang Eulalia Festival' rented the largest number of reusable tableware items at a single event, with 3,221 pieces, followed by the Gwangsan-gu World Citizen Culture Festival held at Hwangryong Chinsu Park in November last year with 2,290 pieces.

In response to this positive reception, Gwangsan-gu plans to continue operating the Reusable Container Support Center this year as well.

The Citizens' Life Environment Council is responsible for handling rental applications at the support center, and Walking Mom cleans and redistributes the used reusable tableware.

Any citizens or groups wishing to use reusable tableware at various events or festivals can visit the 'Gwangsan-gu Reusable Container Support Center (Citizens' Life Environment Council)' to receive tableware and return it as is after use.
