"Starting This Year, 1 Million Won for First Child Too"... Gwangjin-gu Expands Birth Celebration Subsidy Support

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is expanding the childbirth congratulatory allowance to include the first child in order to alleviate the economic burden of raising children.

Previously, the congratulatory allowance was only given to families with a third child or more. However, starting this year, families can receive the childbirth congratulatory allowance for the birth of their first child as well. In July, as part of childbirth encouragement measures, the "Ordinance on Childbirth and Childcare Support in Gwangjin-gu" was amended to expand the scope of support starting from the first child.

From January 1, 2024, 1,000,000 KRW will be provided for the first child born. The second and third children will also receive the same amount of 1,000,000 KRW each. The fourth child will receive 2,000,000 KRW, and families with a fifth child or more will receive 3,000,000 KRW. The congratulatory allowance will be paid in the form of mobile Gwangjin Love Gift Certificates, with some restrictions on where they can be used. However, for children born between January and April 2024, the allowance will be paid retroactively in May. The issuance of gift certificates was inevitably delayed due to changes in the sales agency for Seoul City’s local love gift certificates.

The eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have been continuously registered as a resident in Gwangjin-gu for at least one year prior to the newborn’s birth date. Parents or guardians who are registered in the same household as the newborn on the resident registration can apply.

Applicants must apply within six months of the birth registration. Applications can be made at the local community service center or online through the “Government24” website.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We have expanded the support for childbirth congratulatory allowances to help reduce the childcare cost burden on families. We will do our best to prepare practical measures to create an environment that is good for having and raising children.”
