A man in his 20s who hit a high school senior while driving under the influence and fled the scene, causing the victim's death, has been indicted and is being tried in custody.
The Tongyeong Branch of Changwon District Prosecutors' Office in Gyeongnam announced on the 19th that Mr. A was arrested and prosecuted on charges of hit-and-run while driving under the influence, resulting in the death of a pedestrian.
According to the prosecution, at around 5:27 a.m. on the 1st, Mr. A was driving his sports utility vehicle (SUV) under the influence on a road in Mujeon-dong, Tongyeong City, when he hit a teenage boy, Mr. B, who was crossing a crosswalk, and then fled the scene.
Mr. B suffered severe head and other injuries from the impact and was transported to a hospital but ultimately passed away.
Mr. A abandoned his car about 400 meters ahead of the accident site and fled but surrendered himself to a nearby police station around 6 a.m. that day.
At the time, Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was found to be 0.104%, which is above the license cancellation level.
It is known that Mr. B was on his way home after spending time with friends to celebrate the New Year when the tragedy occurred.
Regarding his surrender, Mr. A reportedly stated that he thought there was nowhere else to run since the accident had already happened.
