Pohang City Leads Healthy Walking Culture ... Advances as a Green Walkable City

Greenway Project Achieves 670,000㎡ of Green Space by Adding 95 Soccer Fields

This Year’s Three Major Slogans: ‘Urban Green Road,’ ‘Pohang Manbal Road,’ and ‘Rest Eco Road’ Expand Green Spaces

Pohang City is accelerating the creation of a green "walking city" that connects all daily lives within the city through walking in the new year.

Pohang City Leads Healthy Walking Culture ... Advances as a Green Walkable City Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang is crossing the Sangsaeng Forest Path pedestrian bridge, completed last October, together with citizens.

Since 2016, the city has expanded green spaces totaling 670,000㎡ (equivalent to 95 soccer fields) through the Greenway Project and has promoted the "20 Million Trees Planting Campaign" with citizens since 2017, planting 18.51 million trees to date, adding vitality to the city.

Starting this year, beyond creating a walkable downtown by connecting urban and street forests that have been expanded so far, the city has set core slogans to make the entire city a healthy, walkable city by linking mountains, rivers, and the coast: ▲ Carbon-Free Walking City - Downtown Green Road (路) ▲ Korea’s Best - Pohang Barefoot Road (路) ▲ Resting with Mountains and Sea - Eco Road (路).

Accordingly, the plan is to first create green walking paths connecting various parts of the city centered on the linear railway forest and to establish a pedestrian-centered street called "Green Walk" along Posco-daero, which extends eastward from the railway forest.

Additionally, the city will complete the restoration of the urban stream "Haksancheon Restoration Project" this year, which is being restored sequentially, to build another walking axis. Pohang will also expand its barefoot paths, famous for the 30 Barefoot Roads and the National Barefoot Walking Festival, and open loess paths in Songdo and Haedo to promote a healthy walking culture, build an eco-friendly city image, and foster community among neighbors through barefoot paths.

Moreover, the city will safely manage 668 km of hiking forest trails within Pohang and promote a healthy hiking culture by connecting disconnected trails through the "Sotijae Section Pedestrian Bridge Installation" project. The entire 112 km coastal trail will be opened to connect the city’s mountains, rivers, and sea with walkable paths.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “This year, we will further expand the Pohang Greenway, establish new loess paths as a city leading barefoot walking, and do our best to revitalize a vibrant walking culture.”
