Prosecutors Request "Electronic Monitoring for 30 Years"

Last year, the prosecution demanded the death penalty, the highest sentence in court, for Choi Won-jong (23), who wielded a weapon in a department store causing 14 casualties.


On the 18th, at the Suwon District Court Seongnam Branch Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Kang Hyun-gu), during the sentencing hearing of Choi Won-jong, the prosecution requested the death penalty and ordered the attachment of an electronic monitoring device for 30 years.

On the afternoon of August 3 last year, Choi Won-jong drove his mother's car and rushed onto the sidewalk near AK Plaza Bundang Branch in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, hitting five pedestrians. Afterward, he got out of the car, entered the department store, and wielded a weapon.


The prosecution charged Choi Won-jong with murder, attempted murder, and attempted preparation for murder, among other charges.


At that time, two women, Kim Hye-bin (20 years old at the time of the incident) and Lee Hee-nam (65 years old at the time), who were hit by the car, died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
