BNK Gyeongnam Bank Wirye Branch Employee Receives 'Appreciation Plaque' for Preventing Voice Phishing

BNK Gyeongnam Bank announced on the 18th that an employee working at the Wirye Branch received a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ from the Seongnam Sujeong Police Station for preventing a voice phishing scam.

The Wirye Branch employee prevented a customer from falling victim to a financial scam after being deceived by a voice phishing gang impersonating the prosecution, who attempted to withdraw 12 million won in cash.


The Wirye Branch employee requested the customer, who said the cash withdrawal was for his father’s business payment, to fill out a questionnaire and informed him that there have been many recent cases of voice phishing and other electronic financial fraud.


Then, the employee explained that transferring money via mobile banking would reduce fees, and when the customer launched the BNK Gyeongnam Bank mobile banking app on his phone, the ‘Malicious App Detection Solution’ automatically activated and detected that malware had infected the device.


Afterwards, the customer postponed the cash withdrawal and spoke on the phone with someone suspected to be part of the voice phishing gang. Convinced it was a voice phishing attempt, the Wirye Branch employee requested a freeze on all the customer’s bank accounts and reported the incident to a nearby police station.


The police, upon receiving the report, immediately dispatched officers who calmed the customer and prevented the voice phishing scam.


Cho Won-tae, branch manager of the Wirye Branch, said, “This case of preventing voice phishing is significant as it occurred in Seoul and the metropolitan area, outside BNK Gyeongnam Bank’s main jurisdiction areas such as Gyeongnam and Ulsan. An employee familiar with the voice phishing prevention manual acted promptly to protect the customer’s valuable assets.”


He added, “BNK Gyeongnam Bank employees will continue to do their best to ensure customers do not suffer from voice phishing or other scams and to protect their valuable assets. Furthermore, we will strive to provide the best customer service.”


Meanwhile, since October last year, BNK Gyeongnam Bank has enabled the ‘Malicious App Detection Solution’ to operate within the BNK Gyeongnam Bank mobile banking app used by customers.


The Malicious App Detection Solution quickly identifies malicious apps and remote control apps frequently used in voice phishing and other electronic financial frauds.


This solution runs automatically when accessing the BNK Gyeongnam Bank mobile banking app without requiring a separate app installation.
