Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is promoting six major projects that embody the values of respect for people, fairness, and communication to ensure a happy life for people with disabilities in the district.
On the 17th, Nam-gu announced, "To improve the quality of life and activate social activities for people with disabilities in the district, we will carry out six support projects including welfare and cultural arts," adding, "We plan to implement related projects from the perspective of people with disabilities to equally guarantee their rights and create a world free from discrimination based on disability."
The disability support projects to be implemented this year cover six areas: welfare improvement, rights promotion, education and culture, social participation, harmony, and cultural arts activities.
These projects aim to support various fields necessary for community life for people with disabilities in the district, enhancing self-realization and self-esteem, and to provide more generous support to socially vulnerable people with disabilities through integrated projects tailored to individual environments and needs.
To this end, Nam-gu plans to invest 135 million KRW in project funds to ensure the rights of people with disabilities in all areas of life and will begin full-scale implementation of the projects around the end of February.
The recruitment of project-performing organizations will be conducted through an open call from the 19th of this month to the 2nd of next month, targeting five areas excluding cultural arts activities. Eligibility for support includes non-profit corporations based in Nam-gu whose main purpose is public interest activities for people with disabilities, as well as corporations and private organizations established under relevant laws.
In addition, Nam-gu will actively carry out support projects for cultural arts activities for people with disabilities to nurture them as capable cultural artists and support their active creative activities.
This is a continuing project that has been promoted annually since 2020, and the Nam-gu Disabled Welfare Center is in charge of implementing the project.
A Nam-gu official stated, "People with disabilities are neighbors and family living with us," and added, "We will continue to reflect their voices in policies to create a free and equal world without discrimination between people with and without disabilities."
Meanwhile, Nam-gu has previously promoted various projects to enhance the welfare of people with disabilities in the district, including the creation of a barrier-free Nam-gu We Comfortable World, support for crisis families with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Yeongho-nam Disabled Exchange Competition, and the Love and Respect Festival for Elderly People with Disabilities.
