On the 17th, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it will implement the "Preliminary Cultural Heritage" system this September under the "Act on the Preservation and Use of Modern and Contemporary Cultural Heritage." This system selects modern cultural heritage that represents contemporary life and culture or has a high potential to become registered cultural heritage in the future, and prepares preservation and utilization plans. Until now, only modern and contemporary cultural heritage over 50 years old was considered for registration. Such heritage was exposed to the risk of damage before its value could be fully assessed, making management difficult.

The Cultural Heritage Administration will discuss the designation of preliminary cultural heritage through on-site investigation and review by the Cultural Heritage Committee upon application from the owner. Selected cultural heritage will receive support for necessary technology and education for preservation and utilization. After 50 years have passed since construction, production, or formation, the possibility of designation as registered cultural heritage will also be reviewed.

A Cultural Heritage Administration official explained, "We plan to conduct a nationwide public contest in May to select preliminary cultural heritage," adding, "If the owned artifacts have symbolic or educational value in fields such as history, culture, or art, or reflect the era, they can be submitted."
