Proactive Food Environment Created for Consumers to Purchase Hanwoo with Confidence
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will conduct a five-day food hygiene inspection starting from the 29th to provide safe food to residents in preparation for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
The district conducts annual food hygiene inspections for the health and safety of its residents, and this inspection will focus intensively on "Hanwoo" (Korean beef), which is expected to see a sharp increase in demand ahead of the Lunar New Year.
The district formed inspection teams of two people, including consumer food hygiene monitors, and plans to enhance the effectiveness of the inspection by selecting 10 representative newly opened or previously unvisited Hanwoo-handling restaurants for inspection.
The main inspection items include ▲ Hanwoo genetic testing ▲ verification of proper origin labeling ▲ contamination inspection of cooking facilities (ATP measurement), and overall hygiene inspections will be conducted simultaneously along with sample collection tests.
For sample collection tests, the district will collaborate with the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment Research to increase expertise. Hanwoo samples purchased from 10 restaurants will be sent to the institute on the same day for genetic testing, followed by an assessment of the appropriateness of origin labeling.
Depending on the inspection results, minor issues will be corrected immediately on-site, while cases of false or missing origin labeling will be subject to administrative sanctions or legal action according to the violations.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “We will do our best in the inspection so that residents can safely enjoy Hanwoo during the joyful Lunar New Year holiday,” and added, “We will continue to strive to create a proactive food environment where consumers can trust and purchase food with confidence.”
