Gwangju Nam-gu Expands 'Living Roads' in Imjeong Village and Wonsan-dong Areas

Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will undertake road expansion construction from Imjeong Village to Pochungsa and in the Wonsan-dong Hanok Village area by 2025 to improve the living convenience of residents in the Hyochon district and Daechon area.

Gwangju Nam-gu Expands 'Living Roads' in Imjeong Village and Wonsan-dong Areas

On the 16th, Nam-gu announced, "We have been selected for the 2024 Greenbelt Resident Support Project competition hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and plan to invest 1.6 billion KRW this year to create unestablished local roads in two areas, carrying out the project annually."

The planned construction sites are two sections: a 1.6 km stretch from Imjeong Village near Urban Brook in Hyochon 1 district to Pochungsa, and a 0.7 km access road to Wonsan-dong Hanok Village. The establishment of these local roads is one of the long-awaited projects for residents living in Imaam-dong, Wonsan-dong, and Ijang-dong areas.

Since large-scale funding is required for compensation for land loss and other expenses, Nam-gu has been promoting the establishment of local roads based on mid- to long-term plans formulated in 2014 and 2017, respectively.

Currently, the 1.6 km section from Imjeong Village to the Imaam entrance toward Pochungsa consists of a 5-meter-wide mixed-use path of unmarked farm roads and lanes, causing difficulties in vehicle flow when cars enter from both directions, as well as pedestrian safety concerns.

To resolve these issues, Nam-gu has been promoting the construction of a 12-meter-wide two-lane local road since 2014 with a total project cost of approximately 6.6 billion KRW. So far, with 5.6 billion KRW spent, land compensation and design services have been completed.

This year, about 840 million KRW will be invested to carry out construction on approximately an 800-meter section starting from Imjeong Village toward the Imaam entrance, and the road construction is expected to be completed by 2025.

At the same time, the road construction project in the Wonsan-dong Hanok Village area will also accelerate.

Wonsan-dong Hanok Village is located behind Pochungsa and at the foot of Jebongsan Mountain. The narrow 700-meter-long alley running through the village, only 5 meters wide, is used interchangeably as a pedestrian path, agricultural equipment route, and vehicle passage.

Nam-gu will invest 813 million KRW this year to construct a 10-meter-wide two-lane road, and the project is expected to continue until 2025.

A Nam-gu official stated, "Since this is a long-term project aimed at resolving the residents' long-standing requests, we will ensure the local road construction project proceeds smoothly to completely eliminate inconveniences."
