"Daejeon City Offers 5 Million Won Marriage Incentive and Parental Allowance"

For Newlyweds Marrying After January 1 This Year
Up to 5 Million KRW Marriage Incentive, First Case Nationwide
‘Parent Allowance’ Provided to Parents with Infants

Daejeon City will start providing marriage incentives and parental allowances from this year. The aim is to increase support for young couples to overcome the local extinction crisis caused by population decline.

On the 15th, Daejeon City announced that to maximize the effect of the ‘HONEY Daejeon Project’ announced at the end of last year, it will implement early payment of marriage incentives for local young couples and newly provide the ‘Daejeon-type Parental Allowance’ to parents raising second-year infants.

"Daejeon City Offers 5 Million Won Marriage Incentive and Parental Allowance" On the 15th, Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, held a New Year's briefing to announce the establishment and payment plans for 'Marriage Incentives' and 'Parental Allowances.' Provided by Daejeon City

The marriage incentive payment will be introduced for the first time among special and metropolitan cities nationwide to encourage youth marriage. The main point is to support young couples with up to 5 million KRW.

Originally, Daejeon City planned to provide marriage incentives to couples marrying after January 1 of next year. This implementation schedule was set considering the consultation process with the central government under the Social Security Framework Act, which usually takes more than six months.

However, Daejeon City explained that the payment timing was moved forward to after January 1 of this year due to concerns that young couples might delay marriage or postpone marriage registration to receive the marriage incentive.

Accordingly, young couples who marry between January 1 of this year and the completion of administrative procedures will be able to receive marriage incentives retroactively by setting a separate application period.

A new (tentatively named) Daejeon-type Parental Allowance, which expands the government-led parental allowance concept, will also be established and operated. Currently, the government provides parental allowances to parents with children aged 0 to 1 year. However, the Daejeon-type Parental Allowance will be extended to parents with 2-year-old infants, allowing them to receive 150,000 KRW per month.

Through this, Daejeon expects that about 8,000 parents of local 2-year-old infants will receive parental allowances, reducing the burden of childcare expenses.

Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, “Despite the difficulties of decreased tax revenue, we have decided to additionally implement policies related to marriage, childbirth, and childcare to overcome the population crisis,” adding, “We will continue to develop new policies so that Daejeon becomes a city where newlyweds can build families with peace of mind and a city good for having and raising children.”
