Gangbuk-gu Disabled-Friendly Beauty Salon to Operate Starting Next Month

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) will operate a ‘Disability-Friendly Hair Salon’ in partnership with private businesses starting February 1.

Since last year, the district has been promoting the Disability-Friendly Hair Salon project targeting people with severe disabilities to improve their welfare and quality of life. At these salons, people with disabilities can receive convenient hair services at affordable prices.

On the 9th, the district signed an agreement for Disability-Friendly Hair Salons with 15 hair salons from the Korea Hairdressers Gangbuk-gu Branch (Branch President Park Jung-yoon) at the district office’s planning situation room. There is at least one Disability-Friendly Hair Salon in each of the 13 neighborhoods (dong), allowing people with disabilities to access hair services close to their homes.

The district supports up to 120,000 KRW per person annually, covering haircuts and gray hair dyeing at 10,000 KRW each, and perms at 20,000 KRW, so that eligible people with disabilities can receive hair services at a low cost.

Additionally, by the end of this month, ramps will be installed at the entrances or inside the salons to ensure wheelchair users can access them without difficulty, and a ‘Disability-Friendly Hair Salon’ signboard will be displayed at the entrance.

A family member of a person with a disability said, “When going to hair salons with a family member who has a disability, it was difficult to use the service due to doorsteps at the entrance or people’s stares, but now that there are hair salons for people with disabilities, we can go together comfortably.”

Gangbuk-gu Disability-Friendly Hair Salons include Olive Hair (Samyang-dong), Salon de Yoon (Mia-dong), Hair Myungga (Songjung-dong), The Mari Hair (Songcheon-dong), Jang Tae-i Hair (Samgaksan-dong), J-Hair (Beon 1-dong), Seon Jeong-min Hair (Beon 2-dong), Kim Ji-hee Hair Love (Beon 2-dong), BB Hair Atte (Beon 3-dong), Hair Village Salon (Suyu 1-dong), Seo Young’s Hair Shop (Suyu 1-dong), Rafia Hair (Suyu 2-dong), Lime Hair (Suyu 3-dong), Sanjeong Hair Hill (Ui-dong), and Chu Hye-sook Hair (Insu-dong).

People with disabilities who wish to use the service can bring their disability registration card and visit the respective hair salon. For further inquiries, contact the Senior and Disabled Welfare Division or the local community centers in each neighborhood.

Park Jung-yoon, President of the Korea Hairdressers Gangbuk-gu Branch, said, “Hairdressing for people with disabilities requires even more delicate care. I felt very proud when I saw the brightened expressions of people with disabilities while volunteering. It seems it will be a time for mutual happiness.”

The district plans to gradually increase the number of Disability-Friendly Hair Salons in cooperation with private hair salons after this year’s operation period.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “The proportion of residents with disabilities in Gangbuk-gu is 2.2% of the total population, ranking first among Seoul’s 25 autonomous districts. The district has taken the lead in improving welfare and creating jobs for people with disabilities. We will continue to show careful attention and consideration for the happy lives of residents with disabilities.”
