Four Past Convictions for Theft and Robbery Resulting in Imprisonment
A man in his 50s who approached a drunken passerby pretending to be friendly, stole valuables, and assaulted him was sentenced to prison.
On the 15th, the 12th Criminal Division of Ulsan District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Jong-hyuk) sentenced Mr. A, who was tried for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, to seven years in prison.
The court explained the sentencing reason, stating, "After comprehensive review, there is a high risk of reoffending by the defendant."
In June of last year, at night near a restaurant in Ulsan, Mr. A saw the victim, Mr. B, in his 60s, walking while intoxicated and approached him saying, "Let's have a drink together." The two went to two pubs and drank, and when Mr. B became heavily drunk, Mr. A took off a watch worth about 400,000 won from Mr. B's wrist and stole it. Mr. A also tried to take Mr. B's gold bracelet (worth about 2.7 million won), but when Mr. B resisted, he punched him in the face and took it.
Police investigation revealed that Mr. A had already been sentenced to prison four times for theft, robbery resulting in death, and other charges, yet committed this crime again.
