Jongno-gu Launches Pilot Project for Waste Fabric Recycling... Supporting Garment Manufacturers and Environmental Protection Together

Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Munheon) is taking on the challenge of both reducing the burden on local clothing manufacturers and promoting resource recycling by improving the disposal method of fabric scraps.

On the 16th, Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Munheon) will sign a business agreement with the Ministry of Environment, Seongdong-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, and the Korea Textile Resource Circulation Association for a 'Pilot Project to Establish a Resource Circulation System for Fabric Scraps.'

This project, starting from January this year, aims to separate fabric scraps generated by local clothing manufacturers by material type and recycle them into vehicle soundproofing materials, pellets, and other products.

Currently, there are about 1,800 clothing manufacturers registered in Jongno, and previously, these companies disposed of fabric scraps by placing them in volume-based waste bags, which were then collected by the district office.

However, through this agreement, Jongno-gu plans to support the entire process on-site, from providing dedicated bags for fabric scrap separation and disposal to transportation and processing. This is expected to reduce the cost burden for many clothing manufacturers and also save related budgets.

Jongno-gu plans to recommend participation through consultations with local sewing associations by March this year and will continue to gather feedback throughout the process.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment will oversee the project, and the Korea Textile Resource Circulation Association will handle the production and supply of dedicated bags for smooth separation and collection, as well as the production of recycled products.

Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “Since fabric scraps are high-value resources that can be recycled into high-quality materials, we aim to successfully establish this pilot project to support local clothing manufacturers and contribute to environmental protection.”
