The 5·18 Special Committee of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairperson Jeong Da-eun) announced on the 14th that it urged the 5·18 Truth Investigation Committee (hereinafter ‘Jinjo-wi’) to disclose individual investigation reports and enhance communication with civil society.
The 5·18 Special Committee held the 3rd citizen forum titled ‘Diagnosis of 5·18 Truth Investigation and Remaining Tasks’ on the 11th at Jeonil Building 245 as part of the ‘May Dialogue’ series.
At the forum, Jeong Da-eun, Chairperson of the 5·18 Special Committee, requested three things from Jinjo-wi: ▲consideration of holding a hearing and strengthening communication with Gwangju’s civil society ▲immediate disclosure of investigation reports by task ▲reflection of a comprehensive report incorporating civil society’s opinions submitted as a national recommendation proposal.
Chairperson Jeong said, “Please review whether the ‘hearing’ stipulated in the 5·18 Truth Investigation Act can still be held, and before completing the final comprehensive report, devise various communication methods with Gwangju’s civil society and officially notify the 5·18 Special Committee in writing.”
She also stated, “If the 5·18 Special Committee drafts a ‘government recommendation proposal’ based on opinions collected from Gwangju’s civil society and delivers it to Jinjo-wi, we request that it be reflected in the ‘comprehensive report.’ For collecting citizen opinions and drafting the government recommendation proposal, the ‘disclosure of investigation reports by task’ must precede.”
Myung Jin, Vice Chairperson of the 5·18 Special Committee, regarding the ‘disclosure of investigation reports by task,’ said, “The disclosure target should be all citizens, not just the 5·18 Special Committee; the scope of disclosure should be individual reports, not summaries; and the timing of disclosure should be as soon as possible.” He added, “Only by disclosing the individual reports as soon as possible can we timely collect and convey civil society’s opinions.”
Meanwhile, Jinjo-wi announced that among 21 ex officio cases, it decided to investigate 15 cases, but made a ‘not feasible’ decision on 6 cases including ‘the circumstances and responsibility of military firing’ and ‘the location of secret graves and excavation and recovery of remains.’
