"The Security Guard Asked for Sparring"... Absurd Explanation in Assault Case Involving a 70s Security Guard

Outrage Over Video of 60s Security Guard Assault in Namyangju
Police File 'Injury Charge' Based on Video Showing Guard Unconsciousness

A video showing a teenage boy assaulting a security guard in his 60s until he lost consciousness has spread on social media, sparking public outrage. The student who filmed the video has since shared his perspective.

Around midnight on the 12th, at a commercial building in Dasan-dong, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, high school student A assaulted B, the building’s security guard. At the time of the incident, B had reprimanded A and his group for causing a disturbance in the building, which reportedly led to a physical altercation. A’s friends recorded the assault and posted the footage on Instagram.

In the video, A, who has a sturdy build, attempts a waist tackle on B, who has graying hair, knocking him down. A then kicks B’s face and strikes his head with his hands. Although B tries to resist, he falls to the ground after continued kicks, loses consciousness, and becomes immobile.

Police arrived at the scene following a citizen’s report after viewing the video. However, B reportedly stated that he had already received an apology from A and was willing to accept another apology, expressing that he did not want to press charges.

Considering the victim’s wish not to escalate the matter, the police informed that the case could be reopened later following proper procedures and closed the case on the day of the incident.

As the controversy continued, the Namyangju Southern Police Station booked A on charges of assault and began an investigation. A police official stated that although B did not want punishment for the assault, the fact that B appeared unconscious for about three seconds in the video provides grounds for applying assault charges. The police also plan to review whether A’s unauthorized distribution of the video constitutes defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act and will decide on additional charges accordingly.

During the police investigation, A reportedly expressed remorse and regret for his actions.

C, who filmed the scene and posted it on social media, responded to the growing controversy by posting on his Instagram, “I went there to break it up. The security guard hit me and then suggested sparring, so we looked for a gym.” He added, “Since all the gyms were closed, we decided to do it in the underground parking lot where there was a CCTV.”

He continued, “I was told to film and turned on the audio recording. After it ended, we resolved things well and left.” He expressed frustration, saying, “The video couldn’t be saved on my phone, so I posted it on my Instagram story and deleted it right away. Why did this happen?”
