[CES 2024] "Hyundai Motor is the most innovative in SDV... Still a long way to go"

Interview with Hyundai Motor Company Executives

Executives of Hyundai Motor Group mentioned the group's innovative strides in SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) and expressed expectations for future growth potential.

On the 10th (local time), Lee Sang-yeop, Vice President of Hyundai Genesis Global Design, Kim Chang-hwan, Head of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Development Center, and Yoo Ji-han, Executive Vice President of the Autonomous Driving Business Division, along with other senior Hyundai Motor executives, held interviews at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, USA, revealing these insights.

Yoo, who oversees Hyundai Motor Group's autonomous driving business, stated, "Among automobile manufacturers, Hyundai is recognized as 'the most innovative' from a software (SW) perspective. However, there is still much effort needed to become a true top-tier player."

He continued, "At the group level, we are making significant investments to reinforce the DNA of startups like Motional and 42dot. The industry sees us as a leader, but there is still a lot to work on, and only then can sustainable growth be achieved," he added.

Yoo also introduced the current status of Hyundai Motor Group's autonomous driving technology development. He said, "Level 4 is being developed mainly by Motional and 42dot, and internally at Hyundai Motor, we are preparing mass production projects for Level 3 and below."

Lee, who oversees the design of Hyundai Genesis, also emphasized the customer experience transitioning to software-centricity. He said, "Our research institute used to be composed of automobile developers, but now the concept of our role has changed to that of a smart mobility solution provider."

Lee added, "We have a concept that expands experience in 3D, connecting everything from robotics to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). I believe this is the timing for Hyundai Motor to expand its domain and solidify its position."

Kim, who is responsible for Hyundai Motor's hydrogen strategy, said, "We aim to realize technological progress from being a mobility solution provider to becoming a clean hydrogen energy solution provider. We are preparing to leap to the next stage based on actual experience, not just an ideal dream."
