Ministry of Health and Welfare Contributes to Reducing Childcare Cost Burden
Application Within 60 Days Including Child's Birth Date
Existing Child Recipients Receive Age-Based Increase
Starting this year, parental benefits will be significantly increased. From now on, families with infants aged 0 will receive a parental benefit of 1,000,000 KRW, and families with 1-year-old infants will receive 500,000 KRW. The parental benefit is a system introduced last year to compensate for income loss due to childbirth and childcare, ensuring that caregivers and children can spend time together at home and reducing the economic burden of childcare.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 11th that, to ease the economic burden on families raising children, starting this month, families with children aged 0 (0?11 months) will receive a monthly parental benefit of 1,000,000 KRW, and families with children aged 1 (12?23 months) will receive 500,000 KRW monthly. Previously, the parental benefit was 700,000 KRW per month for 0-year-old families and 350,000 KRW for 1-year-old families.
To receive the parental benefit for the first time, an application must be submitted within 60 days including the child's date of birth. For children already receiving parental benefits, the increased amount according to age will be provided starting January 2024. The parental benefit will be deposited on the 25th of each month into the account applied for starting from the 25th of this month. It can be received in an account under the name of either the parent or the child.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare expects this increase in parental benefits to contribute to alleviating the childcare cost burden for many families. Applications for parental benefits can be made by visiting the Eup/Myeon/Dong Community Service Centers or online through the 'Bokjiro' or 'Government24' websites. It is also possible to apply together with the child's birth registration through the 'Happy Childbirth One-Stop Service.'
