Cultural Heritage Administration Promotes 'National Heritage Landscape Improvement Project'

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 9th that it will promote the 'National Heritage Landscape Improvement Project' to improve the residential environment in areas where residents live within national heritage sites. The plan aims to establish a future-oriented national heritage protection foundation that coexists and prospers with residents.

Residential Area within Hongdo Natural Protection Zone

This project aims to build a sustainable national heritage protection system in harmony with residents. It supports the improvement of deteriorated residential infrastructure in nationally designated heritage areas where residents live. The project budget is 1 billion KRW, consisting of 500 million KRW from the national government and 500 million KRW from local governments.

The target areas include places where residents live within nationally designated heritage zones, such as Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification and Hongdo Natural Reserve, as well as villages surrounded on all sides by national heritage zones like Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. The Cultural Heritage Administration considers this year as a preparatory phase for efficient implementation. Five regions will be selected through local government applications this month, and 200 million KRW will be provided to each for establishing standards to improve the residential environment.

A Cultural Heritage Administration official stated, "There have been numerous cases where residents moved to other areas due to regulations such as construction restrictions within residential areas of national heritage sites," adding, "We will help each local government establish effective guidelines to prevent this and support the steady improvement of the residential environment starting next year."
