Man in his 30s falls asleep while waiting at a signal after drinking
Witness: "Strong smell of alcohol... reported to police and handed over"
A man in his 30s who was driving under the influence fell asleep on a downhill slope, causing his vehicle to roll down in a dangerous situation. Fortunately, a bystander quickly jumped in and stopped the car, bringing the situation under control.
On the 8th, the Michuhol Police Station in Incheon booked a man in his 30s, identified as A, without detention on charges of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act. A is suspected of driving under the influence on the road in Juan-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at 10:07 p.m. on the 29th of last month.
At the time, A was waiting for a left turn signal at an intersection when he fell asleep. Meanwhile, the brake loosened, and the vehicle rolled down the hill. A driver on the opposite side saw A’s car moving with its headlights off during a red light and quickly got out of the car and ran over.
This driver opened the door through the open window, shifted the gear to the parking position, and engaged the side brake to stop A’s vehicle. It was confirmed that A’s blood alcohol concentration was above 0.08%, which is the license cancellation level.
The footage of the incident was also uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Han Moon-cheol TV.' The dashcam video shows the white drunk-driving vehicle slowly moving straight through a red light with its headlights off. Despite honks from surrounding cars, the vehicle entered the wrong lane and even drove against traffic.
The driver B on the opposite side saw A’s car moving with its headlights off, quickly got out of the car, and ran over. Then, through the open window, B opened the door and manipulated the gear to stop the vehicle. B said, "The smell of alcohol was strong on the driver, and after reporting to the police, I handed him over," adding, "The drunk driver was asleep until the police arrived."
Meanwhile, a police official said, "It appears that A fell asleep while driving under the influence," and added, "The investigation was recently completed, and A was sent to the prosecution."
