At the bakery checkout, 'eyequake'... Price of popular snack 'Cream Bread' rises 21%

Consumer Group Council Analyzes Cream Bread Prices
Tous Les Jours and Others Raise Cream Bread Prices by 9.7~21.4%
"Price Increased Without Indicating Milk Content"

The price increase rate of cream bread from Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours, which contain a lot of milk, was found to far exceed the overall average. Consumer groups expressed concerns that 'milkflation (milk + inflation)' has become a reality due to the rise in raw milk prices.

According to the Price Monitoring Center of the Korea Consumer Organization Council on the 8th, the price of 'Fresh Cream Bread' at Paris Baguette stores in Seoul in the fourth quarter of last year was 1,700 won, up 21.4% from 1,400 won a year earlier. During the same period, Paris Baguette's 'Sweet Condensed Milk Baguette' rose 9.7%, from 3,100 won to 3,400 won. For Tous Les Jours' cream puff bread, the price increased 11.8%, from 1,700 won to 1,900 won.

The average bread price increase rates announced by Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours last year were in the 6?9% range. In the case of cream bread, the increase rate is much higher than the average. This appears to be a result of last year's rise in raw milk and milk prices.

The council pointed out that "milkflation has become a reality." Milkflation refers to the chain reaction of price increases in various dairy products, including white milk, due to the rise in raw milk prices.

They also criticized the fact that the two companies did not disclose the content of raw milk or milk in the cream bread they sell. Without content disclosure, it is difficult to identify the basis for the price increase rate.

The council said, "After examining the labeling and price status centered on cream bread, except for convenience store products, milk content was not indicated," adding, "This shows that even in cream bread, the milk content is not very high." They continued, "Considering the growing consumer interest in health and safety, it is necessary to seriously consider whether food labeling sufficiently satisfies consumers' right to know."
