Seoul Districts Including Geumcheon-gu, Gangbuk-gu, and Seongdong-gu Support Smoking Cessation by Operating Smoking Cessation Clinics
"This year, I must quit smoking no matter what."
This is the resolution made by Mr. A from a district in Seoul.
Having been scolded by family and those around him with remarks like "Are you still smoking?", he has decided to participate in a smoking cessation program.
Geumcheon-gu Operates Healthy City Smoking Cessation Project
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) held the "2024 Healthy City Smoking Cessation Project" campaign on the 2nd to raise employees' awareness of smoking cessation and to foster a smoke-free culture in the workplace.
The "2024 Healthy City Smoking Cessation Project" was organized to inform employees attending the New Year's meeting about the harms of smoking and to support employees who smoke in their decision to quit.
A declaration ceremony was held for those determined to quit smoking, and applications were accepted for participation in the smoking cessation clinic.
The district plans to provide one-on-one personalized smoking cessation counseling services throughout the year, guiding employees and residents who have decided to quit smoking with behavioral therapy and providing smoking cessation aids to increase the success rate.
Last year, among about 1,000 employees and residents who participated in the smoking cessation clinic, 164 succeeded in quitting smoking.
The Geumcheon-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic is open to all Geumcheon-gu residents. They can visit the clinic on the 3rd floor of the public health center or register by phone.
Yoo Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "If there are employees who have resolved to quit smoking this New Year, I hope they receive smoking cessation and health management through the public health center's smoking cessation clinic," adding, "We will continue to do our best to spread the culture of smoking cessation."
Gangbuk-gu Operates ‘Smoking Cessation Clinic’ Year-Round
Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) operates the "Smoking Cessation Clinic" year-round as part of its health promotion projects and has extended the counseling service for registrants from the original 6 months to 1 year.
The "Smoking Cessation Clinic" is a project aimed at increasing smoking cessation rates by providing counseling services to Gangbuk-gu residents and workplaces located in Gangbuk-gu who wish to quit smoking. The clinic operates on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Gangbuk-gu Public Health Center.
For residents who find it difficult to visit the health center, the clinic also operates on the 1st floor of Gangbuk-gu Office (every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and at Suyu Health Branch (every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Additionally, to accommodate busy office workers, the clinic is open on the third Saturday of every month (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the health center.
Moreover, a mobile smoking cessation clinic visits workplaces, schools, and organizations in the area. Workplaces wishing to create a smoke-free environment can inquire at the smoking cessation clinic.
Upon registering at the smoking cessation clinic, participants receive nicotine dependence assessments, nicotine replacement therapy products, and behavioral reinforcement items, along with personalized one-on-one counseling services for one year.
Those who succeed in quitting smoking receive commemorative gifts. At the 4th and 12th weeks, vitamins and other items are provided, and those who maintain smoking cessation for more than six months receive a gift certificate worth approximately 50,000 KRW.
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "I hope residents who have resolved to quit smoking in 2024 put their determination into practice through the smoking cessation clinic," adding, "We will continue to prepare various support projects to manage and promote residents' health."
Seongdong-gu Expands Smoking Cessation Clinic to Support Smoking Cessation Efforts
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is expanding its smoking cessation clinic to help smokers strengthen their resolve to quit smoking in the New Year.
To accommodate workers and residents who find it difficult to visit during weekdays, the clinic will additionally operate on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. For residents who have difficulty visiting Seongdong Public Health Center, the clinic also operates at Seongsu Health Branch and Songjeong Health Branch.
At the smoking cessation clinic, participants can receive personalized counseling and education from professional smoking cessation counselors through nicotine dependence assessments and exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) measurements. Smoking cessation aids and behavioral reinforcement items are also provided. Additionally, participants can receive prescriptions for smoking cessation medications through consultations with affiliated doctors.
In particular, for six months from the start of quitting, the clinic offers a program to manage smoking cravings and withdrawal symptoms through visits and phone counseling. From six to twelve months after quitting, follow-up management is conducted via phone calls, text messages, and emails, providing a detailed, step-by-step program.
The Saturday smoking cessation clinic is available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first floor of Seongdong Public Health Center. Seongsu Health Branch operates on the first and third Mondays, and Songjeong Health Branch on the second and fourth Mondays, both from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Seongdong-gu also operates a mobile smoking cessation clinic that visits workplaces, schools, and organizations. If there are at least 10 participants, inquiries can be made separately to Seongdong Public Health Center.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "I support those who have resolved to quit smoking to achieve success in the New Year," adding, "We will continue to provide smoking cessation services without restrictions on time and place and make every effort to create a healthy smoking cessation environment."
